This biography from the Archives of AskART:
The following biographical information has been provided by Jill Brown, sister-in-law of the artist:

James Archibald Mitchell III was born on June 21, 1932 in Baltimore, Maryland. He studied at the Art Students League in NYC under Frank Riley. He is best known as a marine painter, concentrating on famous yachts and sailing ships.  He is also known for his paintings of old barns of New England.

He works primarily in oil but also in watercolor and has produced a series of pen and ink prints with sepia wash that are still in circulation.

As a young man, Mitchell served before the mast on the Coast Guard barque, "Eagle". He made two Atlantic voyages, one in the teeth of a hurricane. He was twice shipwrecked on subsequent yacht deliveries, once in the Bahamas and once on the Outer Banks of the Carolinas.  He
maintains a continuing interest in maritime history, and is an avid collector of old boats.

His work has been carried in galleries in New York City, Boston, Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, New Haven, and Mystic, CT. Eight of his large oil portraits of ships are at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT, and many of his larger paintings and ship prints are on the market.

Currently, Mitchell has been focusing on book illustration for Flat Hammock Press in Mystic, CT.

He resides in Noank, CT, where he lives among the shells of his antique boats, with a view of the Long Island Sound.
