An illustrator and painter in casein and oil based in Carmel, New York, James E. Mitchell (not to be confused with James Archibald Mitchell), was a student at the Pratt Institute Art School in Brooklyn, New York. He also studied in Paris at the Academy de la Grande Chaumiere and with modernist artist, Edouard Goerg (1903-1969).
