This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Jas F Murray was born James Francis Murray on September 28th 1899 in Lawrence Massachusetts. In 1920 he took his first position, one of many in Boston's newspaper industry, with the old Lawrence "Telegram" to earn his tuition for the Massachusetts School of Art.

Mr. Murray later joined the staff of the now defunct Boston "Post" newspaper in 1938 and remained in their employ until 1956. From there he then took on a position at the "Record American" newspaper where, for many years, his paintings of various New England scenes graced the front covers of the "Pictorial Living" Sunday magazine insert.

Mr. Murray was also very well known for his widely distributed litho-prints of New England especially of those depicting Boston, Maine, Cape Cod and Nantucket. Old buildings of historical importance, covered bridges, lighthouses and various touches of old New England were his favorites.

His art can still be found in calendar form, notepads, postcards, plates and more at many New England tourist destinations. Many of his works were completed during his summer hiatus spent at New Hampshire's Canobie Lake where he maintained a cottage though his primary residence and studio was located for all his years in Medford, MA..

In his 80+ years as an artist he rendered many oil paintings, watercolors and sketches primarily of the New England countryside. His love of the sea is noted by many works of a seafaring nature. In 1973 Mr. Murray retired from his newspaper career to devote his remaining time to capturing on canvas the beauty before him. He died in Tewksbury, MA on September 7th 1990 just a few weeks shy of his 91st birthday.

Written and submitted June 2004 by Rich Murray, grandson of the artist. The biography is from Rich Murray's website on his grandfather,
