Santa Barbara artist James McMenamin is noted for his paintings that draw inspiration from myth, dream states, faces, and animals. His work is both figurative and non-figurative, and in it physical objects may merge without defined barriers.

McMenamin was born in Portland, Oregon, and later studied at the University of Oregon, at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris, and Columbia University in New York. For many years he taught painting, drawing, design, ceramics, and art history at various institutions, including New Jersey State University at Newark, Sacramento State University, UCLA, University of California at Santa Barbara, and Santa Barbara City College.

His work has been shown at several museums, including the Guggenheim, San Francisco Museum of Art, the Oakland Art Museum, LA County Museum, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art.

James McMenamin has written many articles related to art, and has been a contributing critic to 'Artforum' magazine. He resides in Santa Barbara, California.
