The following biographical information has been provided by Janet Noll Naumer, owner of a Meek painting, and comes from a Gallery A (Taos, New Mexico) brochure featuring James Meek.
Southwestern artist James Meek was an active member of the Taos, New Mexico art colony.  Known for his abstract oil paintings, he spent his summers in Taos beginning in 1958 and in 1961 resigned an administration position with the Rocky Ford, CO public schools to move to Taos and devote full time to painting.

A Tennessee native, he was born October 2, 1928, received his B.A. degree from Murray State College (now University), Murray, KY in 1951 and a his M.A. from Union University, Jackson, TN in 1952.  He studied design, color and art history with Clara Eagle, drawing with Don Fenigan, and painting with Charles Bunnell and Charles Dorn.
After serving in the Army from 1952-1954, he began teaching in Rocky Ford, CO where he was first an art instructor and, later, art director for the system and principal of Jefferson Junior High School.  He also taught adult education night classes in painting for four years while with the school system.
Among exhibitions in which he participated:  Museum of New Mexico Art Gallery Biennial, Murray (College) Alumni Invitational, Ten-year retrospective exhibition Creative Art Guild - Colorado, National Art Roundup - Las Vegas, NV, Contemporary Art Society Exhibition - Colorado Fine Arts Center - 1960.
Thirteen of his paintings were purchased between 1947-1954 for inclusion in the Ruth E. Frazier Collection (Tennessee).
