| James Roland McNary was born in Pennsylvania on Feb. 10, 1896. McNary settled in San Diego about 1922. During the 1920s and 1930s he and his wife operated a motel in Old Town. He studied art with Nicolai Fechin and Alfred Mitchell while a student at San Diego State College. For 20 years he taught art in the San Diego public schools. McNary died in nearby El Cajon on March 28, 1972.
