Jan Martszen de Jonge (1609-1647)

He was the nephew and pupil of Esaias van de Velde (1587-1630) and later the teacher of Jan Asselijn (1610-1652).  Besides portraits and landscapes he also painted staffage figures in several paintings by Bartholmäus van Bassen (1590-1652).  Jan Martszen de Jonge is most famous for his numerous battle paintings which frequently caused stylistic confusions with works by Abraham van der Hoef (1611-1666).

Drawings by Jan Martszen are kept in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum, Braunschweig (Inv. Z 559), in the Hamburg Kunsthalle (Inv. 1963/298) and in the Teylers Museum, Haarlem (Inv. P 9).
