| | Born in Connecticut in 1853. Martin maintained a studio in Denver, CO for several years before moving to Reno, NV about 1909. There he eked out a meager living painting western scenery and prospecting; local residents called him the "Prospector Painter." His western genre includes landscapes of Lake Tahoe, Death Valley, as well as ranch and cattle scenes á la Frederic Remington. Penniless and half-starved, he commited suicide in Reno on July 16, 1919. | Source: Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940" Census; Reno Evening Gazette, 7-16-1919 and Humboldt Star, 8-14-1919 obits). | | Nearly 20,000 biographies can be found in Artists in California 1786-1940 by Edan Hughes and is available for sale ($150).
