A Scottish historical genre and landscape painter, he was born in Boharm and studied with Robert Scott Lauder (RSA 1803-1869). MacDonald exhibited frequently at the RSA as well as the RA from 1866-1876. He was elected ARSA in 1862 and RSA in 1877.
Wood writes: "His historical subjects were mostly from the Jacobite period. In later life gave up figure painting for landscape...MacDonald's work was of a conventional type, and he used the dark colours and chiaroscuro effects of Lauder and his pupils."
