This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A miniature portrait painter, engraver and lithographer, John Martin studied engraving in New York City in 1815, having emigrated to the United States at age 18.  He first lived in New York City, where he worked as an engraver and lithographer.  In 1816, he moved to Richmond, Virginia but later devoted himself chiefly to portrait painting, traveling to other cities in search of commissions.

His best-known work is a portrait of James Armistead Lafayette (Valentine Museum), a slave who, in 1784, was emancipated by the Virginia. General Assembly for his service to Gen. Lafayette in the Revolutionary War.  He also did a portrait of Chief Justice John Marshall.
