Biography from Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts:
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, John Moore does painting on canvas that is improvisational, mostly geometric shapes of clusters of ovals involving a process of painting, scraping, re painting, and blending colors of a restricted palette of shades of black, gray, white, red, and blue. He has also done lithographs.

He began taking art lessons as a junior-high age student at the Cleveland Museum of Art. After high school, he served in the US Army and in 1962 took a job for the next eleven years with General Motors. Meanwhile, he took classes at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland and then transferred to Kent State from where he graduate with a BFA in 1972 and then earned an MFA from there in 1974.

In 1973, he began teaching art classes at Cuyahoga Community College and the Cleveland Museum of Art, and in 1974 joined the Education Department at the Cleveland Museum. He also continued to create his own work, and in 1985, decided to move to New York City, where he established a studio and also taught in various institutions as an artist-in-residence.

He began exhibiting in 1975 and had his first one-man show in 1983. In addition to museum collections, his work is in the collections of Cincinnati Bell Telephone, Drug Emporium, and Kaiser-Permanente Medical Centers.
