This biography from the Archives of AskART:
| Known primarily as a pop singer, John Mellencamp began painting in the 1990s because he liked the solitary aspect of the activity. His mother was an artist, who encouraged her son to draw from childhood, and he studied later in Indiana and New York.
In 1990, he wrote a book titled "Mellencamp: Paintings and Reflections" about his love of painting, which he pursues in his spare time on concert tours.
