Born in Towle, CA on Sept. 12, 1903, the son of a gold miner. After graduating from the public schools of Sacramento, Mottram earned a B.A. degree from Sacramento Jr. College. He further studied at the CCAC and CSFA under Ralph Stackpole. He then worked for an Oakland firm as a tile designer, for a pottery works in Alameda, and as an apprentice to local sculptor Pio Tognelli and painter John Emmett Gerrity. In the early 1930s he moved down the peninsula to Palo Alto where he remained. He had his first exhibition in 1936 at the Art Center Gallery (SF) and taught art at San Jose State from 1948-56. Mottram died at home on March 12, 1956. Primarily a painter, he is also known for his clay sculptures and lithographs. Member: SFAA; Palo Alto Art Club; Bay Region AA. Exh: Oakland Art Gallery, 1928, 1932, 1939; SF Art Center 1935 (solo); SFAA, 1936; GGIE, 1939; San Jose State Univ., 1958. In: Letterman Hospital (SF).

John Mottram was born in the Towle, California, where his father owned a gold mine. As a boy, Mottram excelled at music and art. In 1924 he enrolled at the California College of Arts and Crafts, continuing at UC Berkeley. Mottram exhibited widely in his lifetime, showing his strong modernist works in San Francisco, Oakland, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and the National Academy of Design. Mottram accepted a teaching post at San Jose State College in 1947, a position he’d keep until his death in 1953.
