| John Nelson Marble was born in Woodstock, VT on April 11, 1855. Marble studied at the ASL of NYC and Académie Julian in Paris. He was in California during 1881-82 and 1907-12, most of which was spent in Santa Barbara. Sitters for his portraits included Mary Baker Eddy and other notables. He died in his native city on April 1, 1918.
