| Joseph L. Mears was born in Texas on Nov. 9, 1899. By the 1920s “Joe” Mears had settled in Los Angeles. He taught there at Chouinard Art Institute, was outdoor editor for the Pasadena Independent Star, and contributed cartoons to Esquire magazine. He died there on Jan. 18, 1986.
