| Joseph Mathews was born in San Francisco, CA in 1863, son of artist Felix A. Mathews. The younger Mathews showed artistic promise at an early age. He was sent to Scotland when quite young where he was educated by a tutor. At age 17 he went to Paris for two years of study under Bonnat followed by study in Rome. After spending some time in Tangier with his father, he returned to NYC in 1886, married, and lived there until his death on April 20, 1893.
