This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Josephine Mahon born in 1861 and died September 1949 at 88 years. She was interred in the Prospect Hill Cemetery in Caldwell, NJ. Daughter of John and Agnes McNish Mahon

She lived at the Corey homestead in West Caldwell from 1904 to her death. At the time, the house was located at 485 or 55 Bloomfield Avenue, West Caldwell. I believe it has since been moved and preserved.

She was graduated from Caldwell High School at the age of 16, and later from Trenton Teacher's College and the New York School of Fine and Applied arts. She also studied at Pratt Institute, Columbia University, and Stevens Institute of Technology. Miss Mahon became principal of two grade schools in Orange, New Jersey.

After seven years, she was appointed to introduce manual training and applied arts throughout the city of East Orange, a trailblazing step in those days. She continued to teach there for 28 years before retiring. She ws very involved in documenting the history of the area and the part it played in the Revolutionary War.

She was a well-known landscape artist in oil paints, and exhibited in many shows at such places as the Montclair Art Museum, the Newark Library, Newark Art Club, Society of American Women Painters and Sculptors, Catherine Lorillard Woolf Art Club and the National Academy of Design among others.

Submitted by Elaine St. Louis, whose source were obituaries published in newspapers.

This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Caldwell, New Jersey, she was described as a sculptor, painter, craftsman, writer and teacher but little further information is available. She studied art with Charles Hawthorne and Richard Hayley Lever at the New York School of Fine and Applied Art.

She also studied at the Pratt Institute and Columbia University.

Her summer home was Nantucket, Massachusetts, but she lived primarily in Caldwell, New Jersey.

She was a member of the American Artists Professional League, the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and the New Association of Women Artists.
