Jules Merckaert was a landscape painter, born in Schaerbeek, Belgium. He is associated with the Symbolist movement and painters Maurice Blieck, Marc-Henry Meunier, and Paul Mathieu, with whom he exhibited in 1893 at the Brussels Salon Triennal. He was a founder of the "cercle Labeur" and of the "Sillon."
His work frequently focuses on social concerns, including working conditions, cities, and industrialization. He traveled in France, and later in his career his style inclined toward Impressionism.
