This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Julius Theodore Melchers   (1829 – 1908)

A noted art teacher, sculptor, and wood carver who lived in Detroit from 1855 until his death in 1908, Melchers taught man students who later became noted, including his son Gari Melchers.

Melchers was born in Soest, Westphalia, Prussia in 1829 and learned carving there under Ministerman, a sculptor.  He later studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris, under Carpeaux and Etex.  For a time he worked as a modeler at the Chrystal Palace, London and also carved figureheads for ships in Europe.

Settling in Detroit, where he later married Marie Bangetor, he became well known for his life-sized carvings of cigar store Indians, and later for marble and stone sculpture.  In 1891 he was in partnership with Henry A. Siebert.
