Julius Theodore Melchers (1829 – 1908)
A noted art teacher, sculptor, and wood carver who lived in Detroit
from 1855 until his death in 1908, Melchers taught man students who
later became noted, including his son Gari Melchers.
Melchers was born in Soest, Westphalia, Prussia in 1829 and learned
carving there under Ministerman, a sculptor. He later studied at
the Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris, under Carpeaux and Etex. For a
