This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Minneapolis, MN on July 18, 1912. Murray moved to California with his family in 1928. After two years of high school in Alameda, he moved to Los Angeles where his first drawing in 1933 led to a scholarship at the Chouinard School of Art. While active with the Federal Art Project in the 1930s, he painted theatrical scenery and murals. He moved to San Francisco in 1938 and soon had his caricatures in Coast magazine and the San Francisco Chronicle. In 1940 he purchased an old etching press and turned out thousands of prints of the Cable Cars and other local color. He often signed his works "Just" or with his monogram "JM." In 1973 he moved to Mendocino, CA where he remained until his demise on June 11, 1987. As well as an artist, he was also a drummer who played with dance bands in the San Francisco Bay area. Member: LA AA; SFAA. Exh: San Diego Museum, 1936; Maxwell Gallery (SF), 1944; SFMA, 1957; Mendocino Gallery, 1974-87.
