Lester Nathan Matthews was born in Pittsburgh, PA on Aug. 8, 1911. A black artist and a resident of Oakland in the 1930s, Matthews studied at the CCAC under Worth Ryder and the CSFA under Sargent Johnson. During the 1930s he did woodcuts and linocuts for the WPA in San Francisco. By the 1950s he had settled in Los Angeles where he remained until his demise on March 18, 1990.
