Lloyd J. Mitchell was born December 21, 1909 in the Ozark Mountains near Van Buren, Arkansas at the edge of Indian Territory. Mitchell's life was a colorful one, with an early love of horses. His father was a horse trader/trainer and Lloyd began riding before he was tall enough to climb onto a horse himself. He used a rope to pull himself up to the saddle.
