This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Louise Elizabeth Garden MacLeod was born in London, England on April 25, 1857. Louise Garden began her art studies at an early age. While in her teens she studied at London's Royal School under N. G. Green who was instructor to the royal family. After further study under Whistler in Paris and a three-year period of teaching in the London Art School, her health required a milder climate. In 1887 she arrived in Los Angeles where she and Mrs. J. Dalton Bond founded the School of Art & Design (the first in the city). In 1890 she wed inventor Malcolm MacLeod who helped run the school until his death in 1914. Mrs. MacLeod remained with the school until her retirement in 1919 and wed Compton Thorp in 1921. As a painter she specialized in portraits and figures, but is best remembered as an art teacher and administrator. The artist died in Los Angeles on June 24, 1944.
