The following, submitted December 2005, is from the artist:

Lydia Martin resides in Quincy, Massachusetts.  She was born December 17, 1957, in Chester, Pennsylvania, and lived in Boothwyn, Pennsylvania until 1980.  She then moved to Philadelphia in 1987 and then to Boston.

Martin is a contemporary realist painter, specializing in the figure, still-life, Trompe l'oeil, portrait, landscape and genre scenes.  The artist's applied techniques are primarily classical, as perfected in the Italian and Northern Rennaissance and imported experimentally into the modern age.  She creates works in oil, yet feels equally comfortable creating in pastel, watercolor and acrylic.

The artist has painted numerous commissioned works and received top awards for oil painting at the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Arts Club in New York City, Harvard University's Arnold Arboretum, the Winston-Salem Art Association and the St. Louis Artists' Guild.

Memberships include the Pastel Painters of Cape Cod, Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, and artist member of the DeCordova Museum Corporate Art Loan Program.

She was a finalist in the American Artists magazine's painting competition 1991 and '92.  Lydia Martin has exhibited her work at the Arnot Art Museum, NY; the Salmagundi Arts Club, NY; the Butler Institute of American Art, OH, the National Arts Club, NY; the Museum of American Art, PA; the Bennington Center for the Arts, VT; the James A. Michener Museum, PA; the Punta Gorda Visual Arts Center, FL; the Audubon Artists, Inc., NY; the Chatham Arts Center, MA; the Coutts Museum, KS; the Attleboro Museum, MA and the Somerville Museum, MA.

The artist's paintings are pictured in  several art books: Encyclopedia of Drawing by Hazel Harrison;  Capturing Texture by Michael Warr, 2002; Masterstrokes: Pastel, by Hazel Harrison, 1998; 200 Great Painting Ideas for Artists by Carole Katchen,  1998.

Also several of Lydia Martin's art works were included in Cedco's Women Artists calendars 1998-99.  For 2006, her painting, The Border will be pictured on the cover of a book of poetry Secrets in the Desert" by Marjorie Agosin, White Pine Press, NY.

The artists was interviewed by Massachusett's South Shore newspaper, the Patriot Ledger, in July 22, 2003 as well as by the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod's newsletter, Pastelink for the June 2002 issue.

The artist received her BA from West Chester University in 1980, MFA Certificate from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1984.  She studied with Sidney Goodman, Liz Osborne, Will Barnet and Bruce Samuelson.  In 1999, she attended an Independent Study with Janet Monafo at the Massachusetts College of Art.

Lydia Martin is a Professor of Art at the New England School of Art and Design, Suffolk University, Boston. S he teaches Drawing, Painting, and Perspective within the Foundation Program
