Margaret Owen Mellott b. 1923 FORT WORTH, TEXAS
Fort Worth artist, Margaret Owen Mellott attained a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1946. She studied under Yashuo Kuniyoshi and Robert Beverly Hale at the Arts Student League of New York in New York City and subsequently undertook graduate studies at Colorado Springs-Fine Arts Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Mellott continued refining her technique with summer studies in 1972 and 1974 at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.
Margaret’s professional experience includes instruction and graduate level teaching at U.C.L.A., Sul Ross State College in Alpine, TX, the Houston Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, TX, the Houston Settlement Association in Houston, TX and as the Art Librarian at the University of Texas in Austin, TX. Her professional affiliations include participation in the Art Education Conference on Teaching and Learning in 2000 conducted by the Fort Worth Independent School District and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX, being a charter member of the Contemporary Art Center of Fort Worth and service as a Board Member for the Committee for an Artists’ Center in Fort Worth, TX.
Mellott’s work has been shown extensively in solo exhibitions, most recently including Cedar Valley Community College, Lancaster, Texas, 2005; Art on Site shown at various schools throughout Fort Worth, Texas, 2000-2003 and Templeton Art Center, Fort Worth, Texas, 1992. Additionally, Mellot’s earlier solo exhibitions include Lowry Center, College of Wooster, Wooster, Ohio, 1971; Malone College, Canton, Ohio, 1966 and Gregory Gaines Gallery, Houston, Texas, 1953.
The artwork of Margaret Mellott has been included in a number of group exhibitions, predominantly in Fort Worth and Arlington, TX. In 2006, her artwork was exhibited in “Fire and Ice” at the Arlington Museum of Art in Arlington, TX. She also participated in “Summer Vacation,” Central Public Library Gallery, Fort Worth, TX, 2002; “Blue Skies,” Arlington Museum of Art, Arlington, TX, 2001; “Exchange 9,” Wichita Falls Museum and Art Center, Wichita Falls, TX, 2000; “Artists in Monoprint,” Tarrant County College, Southeast Campus, Arlington, TX, 1999 and “Three Artists,” Tarrant County College, Northwest Campus, Fort Worth, TX, 1988.
The award winning artist characterizes her own work as a reflection of her concern for the human condition. Through her art, she seeks to explore the inner realities of mankind’s mind and spirit.
