Maxwell Mandell

Maxwell Mandell was a professional artist recognized for his work in watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastel, lithograph and collage.  He studied at the National Academy, Cooper Union, the Art Students League and New York University.  A long time resident of New York City and West Palm Beach Florida, he spent the last few years of his life in the Sharon, MA area.

He was heavily influenced by the social upheaval of the 1930's as well as by his peers in the WPA. In addition to living in New York at that time, Maxwell studied and painted in Mexico, spending time in Mexico City, Oaxaca, Cuernavaca and Guadalajara. In the 1970's he again studied and painted in Mexico, this time at the Instituto San Miguel de Allende as well as at the University of Colorado.

Throughout his life he explored a variety of subjects as well as styles and media.  These included landscapes, still life, cityscapes, portraiture, nude studies and abstracts.

He taught art for many years in the New York City School System as well as the Robert Louis Stevenson School, the Art Students' League and at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.  He served as Chairman of the Art Department in several large New York City schools including Tilden, Midwood and James Madison High Schools.

He was associated with well known art organizations including the Rutland Area Art Association; Southern Vermont Artists; Brooklyn Watercolor Society; Artists League of Brooklyn; Composers, Artists and Authors of America; National Academy of Design; Allied Artists; American Water Color Society; Art Guild of the Palm Beaches and the Artists Equity Association of New York.

His works have been exhibited at galleries including: the Chafee Art Gallery, the Southern Vermont Artists Gallery, the Malverne Artists Gallery, the National Art League, the Norton Gallery in West Palm Beach, the King Gallery of New York, the Berkshire Museum, the Union Carbide Gallery in New York, the Brooklyn College Galleries, the Ingersoll Library Gallery, the Gallery in the Square, as well as The Brooklyn Museum and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
