Peder Mork Monsted was a leading Danish landscape painter of his time, known for his photo-realist style. He trained at the Copenhagen Academy from 1876-1879 and worked under the artists Peder Severin Kroyer and William Adolphe Bouguereau.

Monsted traveled throughout his career, including to France, Switzerland, Italy, and North Africa. Although most well known for his landscapes, he did paint portraits and figural scenes as well. Monsted was the favorite painter of King George of Greece; he was invited to Athens in 1893 where he painted the city and the Greek countryside for a year.

Monsted was able to successfully convey the mood and atmosphere of the locales that he visited; whether it was the towering peaks of the Swiss Alps or the tranquility of the woods in his home country. Monsted exhibited his works at the Charlottenborg Palace in Copenhagen, and his paintings are featured today all over the world, including the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York and the Chi Mei Museum in Tainan, Taiwan.

Biography from Auctionata:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Born as the son of a wealthy shipbuilder, Peder Mork Mønsted already received drawing lessons in his early youth and later studied at the Art Academy of Copenhagen from 1875-1879. After his studies he traveled to France and Italy, Greece and Egypt, where his works became increasingly influenced by the warm light and brightness of the South.  During the artist’s time in Germany, his landscape paintings became a huge success. Especially in Munich, he was considered to be one of the most important, contemporary landscape artists.

In his works, Mønsted often combined riverscapes and forests and although many of his paintings dealt with all different European landscapes, he often returned to depictions of the vast, open Northern landscapes.  His paintings are influenced by  Impressionism, which he developed into his own, personal style.

Most of his works are in American, English, or German private collections but can also be found at the KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art Aalborg.

Biography from Odon Wagner Gallery:
Please note: Artists not classified as American in our database may have limited biographical data compared to the extensive information about American artists.

Peder Mork Monsted was born in Denmark in  December 1859.  He began his artistic training in Aarhus before travelling to Copenhagen to study at the Kunstakademi in Copenhagen from 1875 to 1879. He was much influenced by his teacher Andries Fritz, court painter to Prince Ferdinand of Aarhus, and he also studied figure painting under Julius Exner and Niels Simonsen.

Monsted's style developed further in the studio of Peder Severin Kroyer and through a brief period with William Adolphe Bouguereau. Although established in Copenhagen, he travelled throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. His work was frequently exhibited in Charlottenborg and at the Paris and Munich Salons. He is widely recognised for his luminous landscapes often featuring water, which demonstrate an almost photographic quality and supreme technical skill.
Museums and Galleries: Aalborg - Bautzen

Monsted is noted first and foremost for his snow-covered landscapes and forests views.
