Biography from AskART:
| A self-taught caricaturist from England, Philip May was a touring actor by age 15, and then moved to London at age 17 where he began his career as a caricaturist and also was a designer of theatrical costumes. When he was 20, his political cartoons were published, and at age 21, he was hired as a staff artist in Australia. From 1888 to 1890, he copied Old Masters in Rome and then returned to London where he became a leading cartoonist and social commentator.
In 1893, he spent four weeks in New York City, and then covered the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago where he reportedly made many drawings of Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show.
