Born in Rome, Italy on July 29, 1879. Montalboddi was from a wealthy family and an expert polo player. He studied art in Rome at the Institute di Belle Arti and assisted Carolus Duran in Paris. About 1900 he married Ida Mellish, a Pasadena girl who was in Rome to study art. Upon returning to Pasadena in 1912, the couple started an art school in the Stickney Bldg. After the death of Ida, Montalboddi worked as a freelance artist in Los Angeles. He died there on April 13, 1972.
