| Robert Hatton Monks, painter was born in Boston, Mass., in 1856. His father, an immigrant from Ireland, had settled there in 1830. His mother, the former Delia Smith Hatton, in her youth in Bangor, Maine, had painted still lifes and street scenes. In 1877, at twenty-one, Monks began studying drawing and painting with German-born and Belgian-educated Emil Otto Grundmann and anatomy with sculptor and painter William Rimmer at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In 1881, he went to Paris (showing 500 of 3211 characters). |
