When Sallie Ellington Middleton was a child, her father walked with her through the woods of Chunn's Cove, North Carolina, telling her stories of fairies, elves and leprechauns who lived under leaves or at the roots of a tree.
His stories were full of folk lore but also of real information about the woods and its creatures, and in looking for elves, his daughter discovered the rich tapestry of life in the forests.
