Biography from Butler Institute of American Art:
Stefan Martin, born in 1936 in Illinois, is a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago.  He majored in painting, drawing and graphics.  His engravings have been seen in the group shows of the Washington Printmakers, the Boston Printmakers and the Honolulu Printmakers.  He was awarded first prize for painting in the Metropolitan Museum's Young American Artists show in1960.

Ben Shahn says about him : "Stefan Martin is almost unique as a craftsman in the field of wood-engraving.  He learned this dying art as a means of supporting himself from one of the few venerable practitioners left on earth.  A full master at a youthful age, Martin then converted his high craft to the service of his sensitive and poetic feelings. Grouped or single figures shape and reshape themselves in the penumbra of vague shadows in his work.  Or aspects of nature emerge through a perfection of lines.  "Lone Tree" is one of his bolder prints, but reveals, as do all his wood engravings, bold ruggedness of concept and exquisiteness of craft."
