This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A Rhode Island portrait, landscape, and still-life painter and educator, Stephen Macomber was both a student and teacher at the Rhode Island School of Design*.  In 1947, he was given the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the School.  He also studied at the Hans Hoffman School of Art* in New York City.

In the 1950s, he served in the Rhode Island state senate.  He lived in Providence and Westerley.

Memberships included the Providence Art Club, and the Mystic Art Association in Mystic, Connecticut.

Among his exhibition venues were the Art Institute of Chicago*, 1913 to 1916; the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts*, 1929, 1931, and 1946; and the Bert Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island.
