Biography from Leslie Levy Fine Art, Inc.:
Suzi Mather was born in Newport Beach, California in 1946. As early as first grade, she had a painting entered in the Laguna Festival of Art. A shy and solitary child, she played with horses until she was old enough to have one of her own. Allowed the freedom to explore the world around her, she roamed the Southern California coast on her horse, soaking in the richness and beauty of nature and developing within herself a way of perceiving natural things that would profoundly affect her art.

By the age of 18, Suzi had a career as an artist that began in earnest. Economic hardship forced her to paint as much out of necessity as of desire, but the result was a quick refinement of her oil painting technique and her first commercial sales.

From the first, Suzi has painted what she knows and loves. A great animal lover and horsewoman, her paintings evolved from horses, cowboys and indians, through farm animals and children to her current passion - cats.

In 1968, Suzi switched from oils to acrylics for health reasons and was surprised to find how much she enjoyed the new medium. While working with acrylics, Suzi learned a great deal about transparent layering and the use of negative space. This experience proved invaluable to her as she moved on to water color painting in the early eighties. Since then, Suzi has developed a unique watercolor method of painting from dark to light rather than light to dark as virtually all other watercolorists do. This enables Suzi to achieve deep, rich colors and brilliant highlights.

In 1976, Suzi moved with her family from Southern California to a cottage on the Oregon coast. Her husband Dale built Suzi a unique Victorian tower studio onto their home. Brightly sunlit, full of plants, cats, birds, and music, it became a personal haven from a troubled world.

The cold northern climate prevented Suzi from spending as much time out of doors as she had in Southern California and her attention was drawn to the animals inside her home, her Persian cats Oscar and Bilford. Mellowed and tamed by years of struggle, Suzi's eye now sought that which was pleasing and healing. The result has been watercolor paintings of cats which are neither "cutesy' nor stylized, but very real in a warm, almost touchable sense.
