This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A portrait, genre and history painter and photographer, Trevor McClurg was from Pennsylvania and also spent time in Europe.  He traveled to Germany with Emanuel Leutze and studied at the Dusseldorf Academy* with Carl Sohn, 1841-43, and then with Thomas Couture in Paris.

He returned to the United States about 1846 and was active in Pittsburgh through1859, when he moved to New York City. By at least 1863 he was back in Pittsburgh, and by 1879 had moved to Chambersburg at which point he had mostly given up painting and was doing commercial photography.

His specialty was historical and allegorical* subject matter, including a number of specifically American scenes involving Indians and pioneers. He operated a design school with George Hetzel in Pittsburgh, 1863-65, later teaching drawing at the Pittsburgh School of Design for Women.

Exhibitions included Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts*, 1845-87; and in New York City, the American Art-Union*; National Academy of Design*, 1853-64; and the Artists' Fund Society*.
