Biography from Savvy Collector:
| Vicenti Mirabal, also known as Chiu-tah, was born in about 1917 or 1918 at Taos Pueblo in northern New Mexico. He was educated at Santa Fe Indian School under the tutelage of Dorothy Dunn. He married a Navajo woman and had three sons.
He was considered an up-and-coming artist and was teaching at Santa Fe Indian School at the time he entered the U.S. Army during World War II. His bright career was ended when he was killed in Gemany in the Battle of the Bulge, circa 1944. Variant spellings of his names include “Vicente” and “Mirabel”.
Various sources cite his date of birth as 1917 or 1918, as often there are no accurate dates of birth or official records for Native Americans who are home-birthed. In addition, there are various dates of death cited, as the Battle of the Bulge was fought from December, 1944 – January, 1945. |
