This biography from the Archives of AskART:
A student of Cyrus Durand in New York City and then in Paris (1863-1865), William Marshall became noted for his portraits and graphics work.  In 1865, he exhibited at the Paris Salon.

At age seventeen, he worked as an engraver in a watch-case factory, and in 1856 began engraving portraits with the encouragement of Cyrus Durand.  In 1858, he became a vignette engraver for the American Bank Note Company.

Interested in painting, he spent time in France pursuing that activity.  In 1865, he returned to the United States and both painted and engraved a portrait of Abraham Lincoln.  The engraving received wide circulation.

He opened a studio in New York City and gained much success with his portrait painting and also did romantic and religious subjects.  In the 1870s, he engraved an heroic image of Christ.

Marshall was the first teacher and also a close friend of Albert Pinkham Ryder.

This biography from the Archives of AskART:

Gordon Fulton of Pleasant Garden, NC wrote that he has a portrait of George Washington by William E. Marshall.  It is the print onto silk for the etching done in 1862 and hand signed in pencil: "Artist Proof Wm E. Marshall".

The Library of Congress has a print of this original.  The curator said she has not known of a hand-signed print from the etching.

The inscription in fine print says: "ENTERED ACCORDING TO THE ACT OF CONGRESS IN THE YEAR 1862 BY WILLIAM E MARSHALL IN THE CLERK'S OFFICE OF THE UNITED STATES FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF NEW YORK COPYRIGHT OF PHOTOGRAPHS SECURED'

And this is signed: Artist Proof, Wm E Marshall
