| Born in Philadelphia, PA on Feb. 15, 1815. In 1838 Meyers went to sea aboard a trading vessel to the West Indies. Shortly thereafter, he joined the U. S. Navy and was a gunner on the Cyane in 1842 when Commodore Jones prematurely seized Monterey. During the War with Mexico he was again in California as a gunner on the Dale. Due to ill health Meyers resigned from the Navy in 1847 and worked at the naval laboratory in Washington, DC.
