Biography from Butler Institute of American Art:
Additional information from an exhibition catalog by Ten Thirty Gallery.

Wray Manning's subject matter is varied - landscape, figure, still life, in both oil and watercolor.  But whatever the subject, whatever the medium, his work is always imbued with a delicate and reticent fantasy.  His colors are muted. He evokes nostalgic memories, often moods of poetic aloofness.

His early training was received in the Art School in Columbus, Ohio.  Later he worked with Robert Henri, Kenneth Hayes Miller and Walt Kuhn in New York.  Since 1934 he has been a regular and most successful contributor to the Annual May Shows at the Cleveland Museum of Art, winning many prizes.  A most successful commercial artist, he has however, never forgotten his early preoccupations.  He increasingly finds his greatest outlet in the fine arts field.
