This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in 1869 in Toyota, Japan. Markino arrived in San Francisco in 1893 and enrolled at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute. At that school he learned the "silk veil" technique which allowed him to convey the mood of fog and other atmospheric effects. Due to racism, he left California in 1897 and moved to New York City. He later settled in London, England where he was greatly influenced by the works of Turner. There in 1913 he published his autobiography, My Recollections and Reflections . After 40 years in London, he returned to Japan at the outbreak of WWII. Poverty stricken, he died in Kamakura in 1956.
