A New Orleans Italian painter especially noted for steamboat scenes on
the Mississippi River, August Noriega was active in the late 19th
century when railroads were replacing the "floating palaces" as primary
passenger and freight transportation. He also painted portraits,
did commercial art, sculpture and often worked with crayon.
Between 1880 and 1881, he was a student of Gibraltar-born Andres
Molinary (1847-1915), who was a teacher and painter in New Orleans from
