Biography from Wiford Gallery:
Having grown up on a ranch that raised very gentle and tame Angus cattle, Bruce Newell has alway been fascinated by animals. Although his art school training and formative years were spent making abstract art, he came to the realization that the animals from his youth represented a tremendous amount of beauty, dignity, peacefulness and relevance, and that making sculptures of them was as compelling as any form of art.

The animals he sculpts are as he remembers them--serene, quiet, dignified. Because the sculptures are an interpretation of life, there is an abstraction and simplification of form rather than an attempt at realism; the style he has developed uses rough areas, the hatchet and tool marks, and the feeling of the materia1s themselves to suggest the physicality of the forms--in this sense he is using abstraction to make the imagery more powerful. <
