Charles Wardlow Norton was a Detroit, Michigan native, the son of John Norton, a tugboat captain. He was, chronologically, the first Great Lakes ship portrayer of the period. Although his work was quite primitive in style, he set standards by which other artists can be compared.

He worked as a marine reporter and vessel agent in addition to his early career as a marine artist. Norton's practical experience may have added to his reputation for accuracy and use of actual ship's measure (showing 500 of 1152 characters).
