This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Dora Miriam Norton is remembered for three major contributions to the art world: Firstly, as an accomplished nineteenth century impressionist painter; secondly like her contemporary William Merritt Chase as a very influential teacher in New York; and thirdly as the author of what some persons regard as the most authoritative books on perspective and sketching.

Her book Freehand Perspective and Sketching (copyrighted 1908) has influenced generations of artists, and is still in print, and still in use in art schools across the globe. Elementary Freehand Perspective was copyrighted in the same year.

She taught art at the Pratt Institute in New York from 1898 to1910, and in her books credits much to the influence of Walter Scott Perry who was Director at that time. Her fellow teachers at the Pratt Institute included Ida Haskell, Henry Prellwitz, Willard Paddock, and C. Franklin Edminster.
