"Glugio Gronk Nicandro has always used his middle name, Gronk, a
Brazilian Indian word that means “to fly.” He first came to the
attention of the art world at 16 when, along with Harry Gamboa, Jr.,
Willy Herron and Patssi Valdez, he became one of the founders of
ASCO (nausea in Spanish). The Los Angeles-based Chicano
artists’ collaborative was among the first to incorporate political
activism into its aesthetic.
