|  Born in England and living in New York since 1974, James Nares does
non-objective painting in single gestural strokes, often using brushes
he makes himself. According to New York Times art critic
Grace Glueck, the effect is that of a combination of "the
intricacies of Japanese calligraphy" and 1960s paintings by Roy
Lichtenstein in that they are "a little cartoony, inevitably evoking
(his) giant brush strokes". . .
