| John Nichols, scion of an American family which settled in Newport, Rhode Island was born in Maywood, Illinois in 1899. He is a graduate of Amherst college.
He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, Art students League in New York and with Raymond Jonson in Santa Fe. In 1934 he was awarded the Keith Memorial Prize of the Woodstock Art Association for the "Most Promising Work of the Year. " He was also included in the famous "New Horizons in American Art" show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1936.
