John H. Neimeyer is primarily known as John Henry Niemeyer

Although born in Germany, John H. Niemeyer grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio,
taught in New York City, and then studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts*
in Paris with Jean Leon Gerome and others.
When he returned to the United States, he became the first Professor of
Drawing at the newly founded Yale School of the Fine Arts, a job he
held from 1871 to 1908. He received an Honorary M.A. from Yale in
1874, and in 1930, the School held a retrospective exhibition of his
