This biography from the Archives of AskART:
Born in Windsor, Connecticut, John Newberry, a survey artist, was raised in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, a mining town. He graduated from Western Reserve College in 1846 and Cleveland Medical School in 1848. From 1849 to 1851, he studied medicine and geology in Paris. He practiced medicine in Cleveland and was then named surgeon on Lt. Wilkinson's 1855 survey to the Sierras.

He went on Lt. Ives's military exploration of the Colorado River. In 1859 he was geologist on an expedition led by Captain Macomb exploring from Santa Fe to the Colorado River. During these trips, he did numerous illustration sketches. His later years were as professor of geology at Columbia's School of Mines.
