Kathleen Nez was born in Tuba City, Arizona to Navajo parents in 1954. She was adopted and raised by a white couple in Los Angeles. Her upbringing is reflected in the multicultural aspect of her pottery. She has been influenced by English and Japanese techniques as well as design elements from Mexico's Mimbres cultures and the Anasazi of the American Southwest.
Nez studied art at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico under Ralph Pardington.
